A minimum quarantine of four months may be imposed, depending on the country of origin. Group I is normally exempted from quarantine. Group II may be exempted if all conditions and requirements are met. Group III (all other countries) is subject to quarantine. Regardless, you must follow exact procedures and provide the necessary documentation, in order to apply for an import permit. A special permit is required for other animals, i.e. birds, reptiles and rodents.

All dogs and cats must be implanted with an identification microchip, with the number printed on the animal’s health certificate. You need to obtain your import permit before you make travel arrangements for your pet. It usually takes five working days to process an application, with the ensuing permit valid for 6 months for one consignment only.

Note: Before making the decision whether or not to bring your pets, we strongly suggest you determine your home country’s policy on allowing them back in.

Owning a pet is quite popular in Hong Kong and there are a number of pet shops and veterinary clinics as well as animal protection societies who need adoptive families.
