I live in the UK and am planning on moving to Hong Kong within the next few months. I have been told that tenants have to pay commission. Is this compulsory and if so what does this amount to?

Yes, there is a one off charge on commission of half a month’s net rental. Many European tenants will be familiar with the idea of paying commission as this tends to apply back home as well – with most living in rented flats! However, those from the UK, such as yourself, should note the difference. Landlords in the UK pay 10% of the annual rental income as commission until the same tenant’s departure, while tenants pay nothing.
